Analysis of the piece geometry influence on bending by laser
Laser forming, which we want to talk about here, has only one thing in common with these conventional techniques: inside the work piece it creates stresses around the yield stress otherwise there would be no permanent for changes. This innovative method does not require tools nor related costs. Here, the forming incrementally results solely from the mass less laser beam with active energy, nearly free of forces and with a high accuracy. Depending on the irradiation strategy, i.e. the intelligent leading of the laser beam over the work piece, one beam can produce different work piece geometry's. If you compare the new bending method with the conventional ones, one thing comes to mind: intelligence instead of strength. Basically, the occurring local plastic form changes result from obstructed thermal expansions in interaction with material properties that, depending on the process, also change locally. A number of new processes have been developed since the seventies when laser was introduced into technology. Some of them such as cutting, welding, turning work, milling, boring and forming of metals by deforming have found technical application in the manufacturing technology. This paper analyses the work piece geometry influence on bending by laser. The influence can be exerted by the thickness of sheet metal, length of bending edge and length of bending side. During bending the work piece has to be tightened, the bending process being performed by fixed laser and movable work piece. The clasps are to take over the work piece mass forces. They are not used for elastic or plastic deformation. This is the essential advantage of the procedure especially with heavy and/or high quality sheet metals. There is no damage to the surface in the area of tightening owing to the low clasp forces. Therefore this process is applicable to decorative surfaces too. The change of form is the result of forming by the laser energy impact.
