Cavity ring-down spectroscopy of laser vaporized graphite

Carbon containing molecules are nowadays subject of extensive research in various fields of science. Especially, importance of C2 molecules observation arrises through several applications ranging from astrophysics, monitoring of combustion processes, industry plasmas, to growth of carbon nanotubes, small carbon clusters and thin film deposition. We performed laser ablation of different graphite targets by means of a pulsed laser (XeCl, 308 nm, 15 ns). Induced plume is allowed to spread in vacuum or in some background gas, such as H2 or N2. Usually optical emission spectroscopy is used to detect C2 radicals in similar experiments. However, in vacuum no emission could be observed, while in other background gases detection is limited to about 10 mm from the target surface, giving no data about the absolute radical density. We use Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, CRDS  1 , for detection of the C2 absorption in the range (450-480) nm of Swan bands. Both spatial and temporal resolved analysis  2 of the C2 absorption is performed. CRDS method allows us to detect molecules at distances up to 4 cm above target surface. Theoretical simulation of absorption spectra is used for determination of vibrational and rotational temperatures.  1 G. Berden, R. Peeters, G. Meijer, Int. Rev. Phys. Chem. 19, 565 (2000)  2 I.
