Heavy metals: assessment of exposure, effects and antidotal efficiency.
Key results of the national research project supported by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Technology 1996.-1999. (grant No. 00220102) have been presented under the same title. The presentation comprised the following main results: 1) Metal exposure assessment: data on metal exposure assessment of lead and cadmium in vegetables of Croatian continental rural area ; data on mercury, cadmium, lead, and arsenic content in fish and mussels from Adriatic Sea ; 2) Metal exposure and effects: data on tissue cadmium and progesterone concentrations in placentas of experimental rats vs. human placentas in relation to cadmium exposure due to smoking habits ; 3) Antidotes for reducing metal body retention: highlights of data on evaluation of efficacy of treatments for reducing lead or cadmium body retention in laboratory animals using chelating agents, meso- vs. racemic domercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). References of respective articles published in the scientific journals are given.
