Use of “ old” and “ new” antiepileptics in the treatment of newly diagnosed epilepsies
In the last years a umber of new antiepileptics of the fourth generation have been introduced in the pharmacological treatment of epilepsy, of which lamotrigin (LTG), vigabatrin (VGB) and topiramate (TPM) have been registrated in Croatia. The long-term use and clinical experience with the new generation of antiepileptic drugs have ever more clearly differentiated them from standard antiepileptics, emphasizing their specificity in both the mechanisms of anticonvulsive activity and their possible neuroprotective action. In this study, the use of antiepileptic drugs at the Rijeka University Hospital Centre and in patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy at the Kantrida Department pf Pediatrics was investigated in order to identify the most widely used antiepileptic. Drug consumption is presented in percent of daily defined dose (DDD) per 100 hospitalizations days of total hospital consumption during the study period. DDD as defined in ATC index 2001 were used.
