Olive integrated pest management in the County of Split-Dalmatia

Researches were carried out during two-year period of February, 2000 – February, 2002 as projected, in selected olive groves of Split-Dalmatian County. Economic importance of Phloeotribus scarabeoides has been on the increase in the last few years. Control of the olive bark beetle (P. scarabeoides) was performed by woody cutting bundle using trap. Based on a test of control of the moth of Prays oleae, which is an economically significant olive pest, by insect development inhibitors (tebufenozide, diflubenzuron and hexaflumuron) the efficiency is in excess of 80 per cent. Through monitoring of the progress and density of the olive fruit fly population (Bactrocera oleae), control tests were performed through various methods of integrated protection. The efficiency of treatments used depended on the fly population density in respective microclimates. Integrated protection methods can be applied in those olives groves where low population density of the fly was determined through long-term monitoring. On the other hand, in those olive orchards where the pest levels are regularly high, such methods are not efficient enough. Furthermore, the basic oil quality parameter – free fatty acids – was determined under the treatments. Regardless of infestation percentages, the oil from fruits processed immediately after harvest was of virgin grade, while the oil from fruits kept dry for 20 days prior to processing contained high portions of FFA.
