Forced Migrants in the Eyes of Medical Anthropologists - Testing the Capacity for Interdisciplinary Efforts

We live in times of chaotic redeploying in which the alleged dichotomies (that of local vs. global, individual vs. populational, economical vs. cultural, to mention only a few) reside an all walks of life, and so no less in our scholarly and intellectual frameworks. In such a constellation it is necessary to enhance, however hard it may be, the common grounds of medical, social sciences and humanities, as well as the practitioners. In following this aim and direction we should be reminder that more than two decades have passed since the modem day pioneers of this interdisciplinarity (Eisenberg and Klienman, 1981) argued in favor of an equal application of both biomedical and social sciences within medicine, in hope of reaching a beneficial outcome for those who suffer. There are many populations that one could term, in lack of a more dramatic word, the marginalized, the suffering or the populace of the war-torn communities. In truth they are also the populations of consciousness rising and capacity testing for all that have dedicated their work to the panacea of growing medical technologies and incorporated health care industries. The experiences of forced migrants world-wide add up to all others. The fulfillment of their needs if served ethically "commodified health" (Nichter, 19989), This presentation will be fortified by case examples from a long-term study of exile and returnee families in Croatia.
