The definition of materials as substances having properties which make them useful in machinery, structures, devices and prodzcts clearly connects them with function and, through that function, utility. It is logical that the effective integration of materials science with its maCROSCOPIC PERSPECTIVES AND CHEMISTRY, WHICH FOCUSES ON ATOMIC- AND MOLECULAR-LEVEL INTERACTIONS, COULD PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND AND CONTROL THE FUNDAMENTAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION FROM THE MOLECULAR LEVEL TO A MACROSCOPIC SCALE.
