Optimisation of Separation and Identification of Heavy Metals in Textile Industry

Very large amounts of different chemicals, dyes, water and energy are used in the processes of textile industry, especially in dying, finishing and care processes. Many of those chemical components have effects on processing and product quality. They are damaging to the textile material, toxic to humans and hazardous to the environment when are released to the streams and rivers as wastewater. In the processing of textiles, metals are frequently used as oxidizing agents for vat and sulfur dyes, in metal complex dyes, metal catalysts (used for curing resins), finishers, dye stripping agents or as fastness improvers. We have developed a method and optimized ternary mobile phase composition for separating and determining Mn2+, Cr3+, Ni2+, Co2+, Fe3+ and Zn2+ ions from their mixture. The sample standards of metal ions were prepared in 0.2 M HCl solution. 4 μ L of standard and sample solutions were spotted on TLC cellulose coated plates. Thin layer chromatography on microcrystalline cellulose can be applied in the separation and screening identification of metal ions. The advantage of this method is its ability to identify simultaneously a number of metal components from the sample. It is simple method that can be used in many laboratories under low cost.
