Reduction of potential groundwater contamination in the production of vegetables on mulch -Lysimetric study
The influence of drip NPK fertigation and mulches (cellulose biodegradable film and black polyethylene film) in green pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) production on salts and nitrogen leaching into groundwater, was studied on a 1 ha field trial in Croatia. Lysimeters were installed on 0.9 m depth to measure the volume and chemical composition of the percolate leaching below the root zone. The greatest leaching was recorded on the control plot (no mulch). Mulches decreased the quantity of leached salts. Nitrate concentrations in the non-mulched percolate was <10 mg NO3-N/litre. Nitrogen leaching was 20.45, 7.41 and 1.79 kg N/ha under no mulch, cellulose bidegradable film and black film, respectively.
