Annual variations in cell volumes of sediment bacteria in coastal Adriatic Sea
The changes in specific volume of bacteria as well as their morphological diversity were studied in sediments of one coastal station in middle Adriatic Sea. The uppermost 10cm of sediment was collected with a piston corrrer monthly, from January to December 2000. Bacteria were dislodged from the sediment particles by ultrasonic treatment, and their volumes were estimated with epifluorescence microscopy. The cells were grouped into morphological categories and further classified into 35 size classes. Bacterial cell volume fluctuated from 0, 056um3 in April to 0, 789um3 in December. Rods accounted for the greatest numerical proportions in total bacterial biovolume, especially during winter months (72%). The proportion of cocci in total cell volume fluctuated from 2% to 36%, and was greatest during summer. Filamentous forms contributed to total volume from 12% to 26%. The most numerous bacterial size class was the 0, 025mm3 including 21, 54% of total volume. The cells smaller than 0, 01um3 accounted for 64% of total volume. This study provides the first data on bacteria in sediments in the Adriatic Sea along the eastern coast.
