Half-a-century of the journal Tourism/Turizam (1953 &#8211 ; 2002)
In 2002 the journal TOURISM/TURIZAM celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of continuous publication. Having examined a huge opus of more than fourteen thousand printed pages in 449 issues of TOURISM/TURIZAM, the author presents a summarized review of basic information on that publication which began as a modest bulletin TURISTIČKE VIJESTI back in 1953. Having changed the title in TURISTIČKI PREGLED the following year (1954), it became a monthly and was gradually established as one of the leading professional publications in the area of tourism. In 1956 the publication was renamed again into its present title TOURISM/TURIZAM. Although since then there were a number of changes in its publishing and editorial policy, the journal main objective to comprehensively discuss and elaborate the tourism phenomena in its various sections, remained intact. Several hundred authors and several thousand articles in a variety of topics are evidence of the whole spectrum of themes covered, no matter whether of permanent or occasional character. It was primarily a publication of the national tourism organisation of the time which has published and financed the journal and whose members, mostly due to their own enthusiasm, were responsible for its regular publishing. The TOURISM/TURIZAM, as we know it today, started to take its shape in 1992, when the Institute for Tourism became a co-publisher of the journal and the editorial policy shifted from the professional to the academic publication. Then another turning point was the 1996 when the journal became quarterly and a parallel English translation introduced. The new international editorial board was also formed around that time, and all articles started to be double blind reviewed. At about that time the journal started to be refereed in a series of foreign secondary publications. Then the year 2000 represents yet another turning point when the two separate editions were introduced - a domestic one titled TURIZAM and an international one in English appeared as TOURISM. This has given another impetus to building its reputation as an interdisciplinary academic journal with international reputation where many respectable foreign authors publish their papers. The article argues that TOURISM/TURIZAM, as one of the oldest European journals in that field of study, is in a good position to follow the latest achievements in tourism also in the future, and to establish Croatia as a country where that phenomenon is permanently and seriously a subject of scientific and professional interest and research, witnessed by its half-a-century tradition.
