Systematic relationships between taxa of genus Lilium in Croatia

Throughout Europe, ten species of the genus Lilium are distributed. In the Balkan Peninsula region, the genus Lilium differentiates into series of vicarious species. Five taxa from Croatian flora are included in this study and relatedness among them is discussed, with particular attention on dubious stenoendemic taxa. The most widespread species is Lilium martagon L. and in Dalmatia region it differentiates into taxa L. cattaniae Vis. with a still unclear taxonomic status. Therefore in the present study, we used molecular data to clarify the systematic relationship between them and formulate more accurate nomenclature. Another objective of this study was to analyse the relationships between the Croatian species belonging to the carniolicum group, L. carniolicum Bernh. ex Koch and L. bosniacum (G. Beck) G. Beck ex Fritsch. As there is a small difference in characteristics between these species, there are many contradicting opinions about their taxonomic rank. Restriction-site variation of PCR-amplified cpDNA fragments were used to determine whether the observed morphological variation has a genetic basis and investigate the variation pattern from different geographical locations. The data were analysed using multivariate statistical and cladistical methods. This paper presents the preliminary results of this research.
