Effect of land use upon the leaching of nitrogen into groundwater in area of the future water pumping station
A lysimeter trial was set up as part of interdisciplinary investigations aimed at opening new pumping stations for the suplly of drinking water to the city of Zagreb (Croatia). The research ojective was to determine the intensity of nitrate penetration into groundwater with respect to three different land use patterns (cultivated land, meadows/grassland and uncontrolled dump site). Lysismeters and soil solution samplers were installed at the same locations. Cultivated land had the greatest nitrate concentration of 120 mg NO3-N/l as a consequence of incidental contamination by liquid household wastes. Amounts of nitrate leached from meadows/grassland and the dump were 3.1 and 2.2 kg N/ha respectively.
