The role of conceptual blending in some Croatian and English idiomatic structures
The paper will attempt to investigate the role of conceptual blending as a cognitive model for creating of some idiomatic structures in Croatian and English, focusing on the instances of metonymically motivated examples of idioms which involve a conventional PART-FOR- WHOLE metonymy and some crosslinguistic issues ensuing from the results of the study. The research will be based on corpora excerpts from the Croatian National Corpus, British National Corpus and the COBUILD Bank of English and will focus on the online modifications of the idioms, either structural or pragmatic, and the interplay of the mental spaces involved in such modifications. An attempt will be made to explain how the speaker and the addressee respectively decode and encode particular aspects of the information provided by an idiom and fit it into concepts relevant to the cognitive scenario provided by the idiom given.
