Frequency of micronuclei in peripheral blood of rats exposed to microwave irradiation

Male Wistar rats were expsed for two hours a day, seven days a week for a month to 2450 MHz radiofrequency microwave (RF/MW) radiation at power density of 5-15 mW/cm2. Sham-exposed rats were used as controls. Experimental animals were euthanized on the final irradiation day of each treated subgroup. Peripheral blood smears were examined for potential genotoxicity by the presence of micronuclei in polychromatic erythrocytes (PCEs). The results for the time-course of PCEs indicated significant differences (p<0.05) for the 2nd, the 8th and the 15th day between sham and treated subgroups. Increased influx of immature erythrocytes into the peripheral circulation at the beginning of the experiment revealed that the proliferation and maturation of erythropoietic cells have been affected by exposure to the 2450 MHz radiation. Such findings are indicators of irradiation effects at the bone marrow erythropoiesis and their consequent reflection in circulating red cells. The incidence of micronuclei/1000 PCEs in peripheral blood was significantly increased (p<0.05) in the subgroup exposed to 8 irradiation treatments of two hours each in comparison to the sham-exposed subgroup. It is likely that an adaptive mechanism, in both erythropoiesis and genotoxicity in rat experimental model, appeared during the subchronic irradiation treatment.
