Curing Kinetics and Chemorheology of an Epoxy/Anhydride System
The curing kinetics and the chemorheology of a low-viscosity laminating system, based on a bisphenol A epoxy resin, an anhydride curing agent and a heterocyclic amine accelerator was investigated. The curing kinetics was studied in both the dynamic and isothermal conditions by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The steady shear and the dynamic viscosity were measured throughout the epoxy/anhydride cure. The curing kinetics of the thermoset system was described by a modified Kamal kinetic model, accounting for the diffusion-control effect. A chemorheological model which describes the system viscosity as a function of temperature and the conversion is proposed. The model is a combination of the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation and of an conversion term originally used by Castro and Macosco. Good agreement between predicted and experimental results was obtained.
