Cultural Memory and the Renewing of Theatre Systems: The Ruler Is Exposed. But Is He Deposed?
The performance The Greatest Scoundrel of Them All (directed by Branko Brezovec according to Miroslav Krleža&#8217 ; s expressionistic novel), recently presented as the culmination of new-theatre unmasking the mythical structures of dominant political imaginarium, is analysed as a counter-spectacle to the show organised on the stage of the Croatian National Theatre in the honour of President Tuđman&#8217 ; s 75th birthday (1997): Of Ways of the Cross the Final End. The paper focuses on the iconoclastic strategies of The Greatest Scoundrel but also raises a question: have all the mechanisms of re-production of political power, autocracy and totalitarianism been revealed in this exceptional performance?
