Development and Use of a Neurosurgical Ultrasound Endoscope Probe

Minimally invasive ultrasonic surgery is the most recent field of application of ultrasound in medicine. Due to the principles of ultrasonic surgery (direct cutting, cavitation, fragmentation and thermal damage), the irreversible changes in tissues and organs are reported. The aim of this study is to optimize construction of an endoscopic contact ultrasonic probe (ECUP) with respect to some specific technical, medical and operational/ergonomic requirements. On the basis of the theoretical model, the ECUP was constructed and verified through extensive experiments. The ECUP has been realized as a rod-type resonant vibrating system, consisting of a half-wave lenght transducer of piezoceramic material, and a resonant wave-guide in the form of a specially shaped velocity transformer. Neurosurgical treatments with ultrasound cavitation probe can result with damage to healthy tissue (because of focussing of high-energy ultrasound). In order to avoid this, 2D and 3D simulations of ultrasound field in a human scull were developed. To check the precision of simulation, measurements on real scull were carried out.
