Design Consideration for Ship's Ballast Water Control and Treatment
There are many pathways recognized as the means or possible means of the introduction of unwonted aquatic organisms and pathogens in ballast water. This consist of organisms and pathogens in ballast water, fish tanks on fish travellers, in accumulated sediments in ballast tanks and chain lockers, bio fouling on and within ship&#8217 ; hulls and fishnets and international introductions. The design aspects will be those relating to the ship structure and installation of equipment to ensure that any management, control or treatment option is safe for the ship and crew and cost effective. This paper discusses the design considerations for ships for the control and treatment of ballast water to minimize the risk of introductions of these unwanted aquatic organisms and pathogens into port and territorial waters by ship&#8217 ; ballast water and sediment discharges.
