ENVIRONMENTAL DECREASE OF 137Cs-ACTIVITY CONCENTRATION IN MILK IN CENTRAL EUROPE AFTER A NUCLEAR FALLOUT - A COMPARISON

After a major contamination of a territory due to fallout from a reactor or reprocessing plant accident or a weapon's detonation one of the important questions to be addressed is the period required for countermeasures to be applied. This is particularly important for long-term countermeasures with high costs and consequences to the involved population (relocation, prohibition to produce local foodstuffs, etc.). Therefore, the decrease in activity concentration in milk as indicator for the time-spans required was investigated in several central-European countries and compared to each other. This decrease of the activity concentration is very similar in all countries involved in the study indicating that this decrease by natural effects is a universal effect typical for agricultural soils. It results in activity concentrations 10 years after fallout of about 0.2 &#8211 ; 0.5 % of first year average levels if the fallout had occurred in late spring. The decrease is characterized by two exponential curves with an effective halflife for 137Cs of typically 1 - 3 y in the first four years after the direct contamination phase and one of 3 - 6 y in the following years. In some countries, however, a slower decline by an effective half-life of 14 - 40 years is observed which may be due to an increasing number of samples below detection limit.
