Geografska karta kao vizualni model svijeta
A map is a reduced scheme of spatial features of reality on a flat surface, done with cartographic symbols. The basic problem is the necessity to present reality in a visually intelligible and acceptable way, i.e. convey the maximum of information with the minimum of means: the transfer of big to small, the three-dimensional to the two-dimensional, the replacement of an object with a symbol, the deconstructing of reality to its constituent parts. The new cartography of anamorphic maps suggests a transformation of geographical space using new metrics (time needed to travel the distance, costs, or accessibility). Mental (or cognitive) maps are visualisations of subjective ideas of individuals or groups of people. In other words, invisible phenomena are also visualizes on the map. The higher the level of abstraction of the map system, and the more the map resembles the logical mathematical model, the more the secondary, hidden information surpasses that which the eye perceives.
