Auxin structure and activity

Structure-activity relationships were a preferred topic of study, during the first decades of plant hormone research, and are receiving renewed interest as the proteins involved in the physiological response are being characterized. We are using experimental (X-ray crystallography, spectroscopy) and computational (molecular modelling) methods to determine the structures of auxin molecules and their physico-chemical properties. Establishing correlations of the information thus obtained with the auxin properties of the respective compounds is a slow process, but some data obtained in the Avena coleoptile straight-growth test and in deseeded pea pericarps (in planta) will be presented and discussed.
