Coagulation changes in cord blood from preeclamptic and eclamptic deliveries

Objective. Coagulation and fibrinolytic system were analysed in pregnant women with preeclampsia and convulsive eclampsia and their newborns, as well as healthy pregnant women and their newborns. Study design. A total of 53 pregnant women and their newborns have been followed up; 17 having preeclampsia or convulsive eclampsia, and 36 healthy pregnant women which formed the control group. Results. The control group had significantly increased levels of factor II and V when compared to index group. During the course of pregnancy levels of antithrombin III (AT III) and protein C were decreased. Pregnant women with severe EPH gestosis have significantly lower levels of AT III compared to healthy pregnant women. Coagulation factor I (fibrinogen), II, VII and VIII were significantly higher in healthy women when compared to their newborns. Coagulation factors I, II, VII and VIII were significantly higher in women with preeclampsia compared to their newborns. The thromboelastogram follow-up revealed the fact of newborns inclined to clotting. The values of "r" and "k" parameter were extremely low in both groups of newborns when compared to adults. Conclusion. The newborns of mothers with preeclampsia had significantly lower levels of AT III compared to newborns of healthy mothers
