The effect of hyperbaric oxygenation on Na+, K+-ATPase and SOD activities in hippocampus and optic nerve of ischemic rats

The aim of our study was to examine the influence of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) on Na+, K+-ATPase and SOD activities in hippocampus and optic nerve of global cerebral ischemia exposed rats. Experiments were conducted on Hannover-Wistar rats, weighing 250 g. Procedure: Animals were exposed to global cerebral ischemia (Pulsinelli and Brierly, 1979) and after different reperfusion periods (immediately, 0.5, l, 2, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hrs after ischemia), Na+, K+-ATPase and SOD activities were measured. A part of ischemic animals were exposed to HBO after reperfusion during seven consecutive days, at 222, 86 kPa pressure of 99, 5% oxygen, lasting 60 min. We found a significant decrease in Na+, K+-ATPase activity in both hippocampus and optic nerve in periods from 0.5-168 hrs after ischemia . The most profound decrease was registered in 24-hrs reperfusion time. Treatment with HBO prevented enzymatic inhibition in animals exposed to hyperbaric oxygen 0.5-24 hrs after ischemic injury. SOD activities in hippocampus and optic nerve were significantly higher 24, 48 and 168 hrs after ischemia and it was not changed by the treatment with HBO. Conclusions: Decrease in Na+, K+-ATPase and increase in SOD activity is evident in ischemic animals exposed to various reperfusion intervals. Treatment with HBO has maintained Na+, K+-ATPase enzymatic activity up to control levels and exerted neuroprotective effect, while influence on SOD activity was not registered.
