The relation of parenting practices to adolescent leisure-time activities and substance use

The object of the present research was to examine the relationships between parental child rearing practices, adolescent involvement in after-school activities and substance use. The research was carried out on a representative sample of 2823 Croatian high school students. The participants completed a questionnaire that measured variables including parental support, parental involvement, parental monitoring and joint decision-making. Children’ s after school activities, school achievement and self-reported alcohol and drug use were also measured. The results showed that substance use was positively related to unorganised patterns of adolescent after-school activities characterised by higher involvement with peers and interest in self-entertainment as opposed to interests in cultural and extracurricular activities. More frequent alcohol and drug consumption was also negatively related to school achievement and parental monitoring and support. Parental monitoring was the most significant predictor of adolescent substance use. Boys demonstrated a more frequent school misconduct and substance use than girls. However, parents seemed less inclined to monitor boys´ activities. Overall, the findings indicated that involvement in organised after-school activities and higher parental monitoring of children’ s activities might confer protection against the development of addictive behaviour.
