Parameter changes after weathering of soft rock in flysch
The Croatian coastal region consists of a great number of flysch layers. This type of soft rock is often used for the construction of embankments. Once the rock has been excavated its physical properties start to change due to weathering processes. This phenomenon causes serious damage to the embankments with the development of vertical deformation of 10 % during 15 years. The problem can be solved by treating the marl in the flysch layers as soil after excavation. If it is exposed for some time to weathering or if it is treated by some wetting-drying processes, the result will be soil (clay or silt) material. The paper presents the results of laboratory investigations (tests) of physical-mechanical parameters of some sections of the flysch layers which have been artificially weathered. They are treated like a soil material. These parameters can then be used to design the slope stability and to predict the settlement of the flysch layers for which this process is significant. As illustrated in this paper, only these, weather sensitive flysch layers, can be treated in this way.
