For a "new" school - different teachers: towards reconstruction of teacher education system in Croatia

This work, besides providing a description of the present educational system (including teacher education system) in the Republic of Croatia, presents the basic trends of the future changes in the system and their implications for the teacher education. The work is divided into parts covering a brief historical outline and presentation of the current organisation of pre-school, elementary, secondary and higher education, as well as teacher education in its two segments - pre-service and in-service. Furthermore, it provides a more detailed insight into the present pre-service education and training for pre-school teachers, teachers for lower elementary, upper elementary, and secondary schools, with additional elaboration on education of teachers for secondary vocational schools. In the separate part which discusses the perspectives of the future system of education, including teacher education, besides pointing out the present schortcomings and problems, outlined are the basic principles of existing proposals on which the future educational system is to be constructed particularly in view of the need of building the national educational policy based on the concept of life- long education.
