Application of near infrared transmission for determination of wet gluten in wholw grain wheat
Near Infrared Spectroscopy has been used for the last 25 years for quality testing of material from wheat breeding programs. As a nondestructive and rapid routine method for the determination of grain constituents, this technique allows breeders to screen large number of lines for one or more characteristics (moisture, protein, fat, starch, etc.) at a time. A set of 195 different wheat samples was obtained from several wheat cultivars from 2002 harvest, grown at different sites throughout Croatia. The two different methods were used for the determination of wet gluten content. As NIT spectroscopy is used for determination wet gluten content on "Infratec 1241 Grain Analyzer" since 2002, the aim of this paper was to compare the wet gluten results obtained by this instrument with standard Gluten index method results. According to the results for wet gluten content obtained by "Infratec 1241 Grain Analyzer" and by Gluten index method it can be concluded that they are comparable. Considering its advantages over standard methods, including its wide-range calibration, NIT represents a good candidate for evaluation of wet gluten quantity in the future, as it is used for protein and moisture determination in wheat grain today.
