Structural Funds of the EU
By following the experiences of the EU, Croatia is trying to moderate differences in the development of its regions and to reduce the unemployment rate through its Fund for the Regional Development, and Fund for Development and Employment. European regions are not equally developed. Some regions are distinctly developed and some are extremely undeveloped. The development is concentrated mainly in large urban areas around the cities of Paris, Milan, Hamburg, Burdens, London, Brussels and Copenhagen. The developmental disparity among the regions is significantly high, and it has a natural tendency to expand even more. The undeveloped areas are characterised by low incomes and high unemployment rates. The unbalance in regional development represents a threat to the integration. An equilibrium development is of great importance for the Union. Therefore, the European Union conducts the common regional policy and it does not leave the development of undeveloped areas in the care of member countries only. The EU regional policy aims to reduce differences between different areas, and to decrease the level of undeveloped regions. It aims to balance uneven development and aids underdeveloped regions. The regional policy is a supplement to national policies, which are being conducted towards the development of underdeveloped regions. It consists of direct financial aid and special aid to local industries, or the investments into the infrastructure. The regional policy is financed mostly through structural funds. The structural funds make up approximately one third of the EU budget.
