Physical conditioning status of Croatian top-level female handball players changed by the preparation period training programme

Successful performance in handball is determined by a large number of abilities, attributes and the net of technical-tactical knowledge of players. The present study investigates changes in certain indicators of conditioning status (fitness) of a top-quality female senior handball team. Sample of participants: 18 senior female players, members of the HC Podravka, Koprivnica, champions of the Croatian First Division League, the Croatian Cup winners and European Champions League participants. Sample of variables: the 9-item battery of tests measuring motor and functional abilities relevant to performance in handball. Experimental procedure: a training programme was implemented during the preparatory period. The mesocycle counted 43 days out of which 38 had training sessions and/or matches. The 41 single training sessions and 16 matches took altogether 86 working hours out of which 38 hours were dedicated to physical conditioning and 48 hours were oriented to technical-tactical preparation. The results of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed statistically significant global differences between the first and the second measurement. The greatest changes ocurred in variables assessing strength endurance of a dynamic type of the trunk, alactic speed endurance, agility, lactic speed endurance and speed power of a sprinting type. Just in two variables (arm and shoulder absolute power, and leg explosive power of a horizontal jump ability), out of the nine implemented, statistically significant changes were not registered.
