Effect of natural convection during melting of ice in water
The mathematical model of ice melting process in a rectangular cavity with adiabatic walls is solved by the finite volume method on a fixed grid. Two problems of ice melting in rectangular cavity filled with water are simulated: conduction melting and natural convection-conduction melting. Comparison of numerical results clearly points out great importance of natural convection in melting process. Obtained results for the considered problem show that the time needed for complete ice melting is six times shorter in the natural convection case with respect to the case of pure conduction.
