Physics and Brain
Neuroscience is a new and exciting field that explores the brain, an extremely complicated system. In order to understand interaction between atoms and molecules in the brain, the knowledge of physical laws governing these interactions is essential. A basic knowledge of what happens at the smallest level of matter, the realm of subatomic physics, has given scientists powerful tools for studying living human brains. In this poster, macroscopic measurements of human brain activity are discussed introducing modern brain imaging techniques such as magnetoencephalography (MEG), electroencephalography (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon computed tomography (SPECT). Some suggestions how this knowledge could be used in physics classes are also given.
