Determination of polymorphism at ten satellite loci in the Croatian population by automated detection
A population study was carried out on the sample of 167 unrelated donors from the wider area of Croatia's capital Zagreb, using nine short tandem repeat (STR) loci (TH01, VWFA31, FES/FPS, F13A01, D1S1656, D12S391, D18S535 D22S683 and SE33) and one variable tandem repeat (VNTR) locus (D1S80). After a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) the samples were loaded on the 6% polyacrylamide gel and detected by an ALFexpress (Pharmacia Biotech) sequencer. All loci confirmed the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The comparison between Croatians and other Caucasoids, reported so far, did not show any significant differences. The population data showed, that these STR loci are highly polymorphic with a heterozygosity value in a range between 0.74 and 0.89. The probability that two randomly selected, unrelated individuals possess identical alleles at all 10 tested loci was one in 1.08x1015 Croatians.
