Multicriteria decision making in cognitive virtual-reality test

This paper analysed the tasks of a test constructed in virtual reality (VR) technology and subsequently validated (Viskić-Štalec and Katović, 2000 ; 2001). The real and imaginary situations in formation (4-WAY) skydives occurred alternately in 25 tasks of the VR-test. In the test tasks in this research study exclusively the visual computer generated stimuli were used. The methodological procedure comes down to the assessment by the set of four independent experts about the pairs of test items on the basis of eight criteria. The following assessment criteria, set in order to hinder the examinees in their assessment of the shape of formation, were analysed: the movement of the formation in space, figure complexity, rotation around the x, y or z axis and mental rotation with two subjective criteria (subjective complexity and subjective xz rotation). The Multicriteria Decision Making (MCDM) was solved using the Potential Method (PM) explained by Čaklović, 2001. The main tool in PM is pair-wise comparison for collecting input data. This means that priority should be given to one of the two alternatives in consideration. The level of priority can take values in a five-point scale E-W-S-D-A, where E means equal priority, W-weak, S-strong, D-demonstrated and A-absolute priority. The comparison can be done for each pair of alternatives with respect to each criterion. Results show that examinee will more easily recognise those forms and relations between them in the tasks that require the presence of the visual-perceptive dimensions that are in the background of solving such tasks and the capacity of visualization, the ability in manipulating visual patterns as indicated by the level of difficulty and complexity in visual stimulus material (item/task), regardless whether the examinee has previously encountered such a figure or not and to what extent he/she was obstructed in his/her attempt to recognise the figure. Likewise, the examinee will more quickly and more easily recognise the formation pattern among the suggested test answers that corresponds to the correct formation shape.
