Seeing With the Body's Eyes
History of philosophy records altogether poor recognition of the relevance of the body. One remarcable exception to this tradition is Maurice Merleau-Ponty, whose phenomenology establishes the body not only as the basis of perception, but also as a cognitive access to the world. In such a way the body has been constituted so as to include the symbolical. In a final instance it enabled conception of the body as a dimension of the culture. This paper focuses on some aspects that fall under the general heading of the bodily basis of knowledge.
