Cooling Water Treatment by UV Irradiation

There is great possibility of microbiological contamination in cooling towers in industry or power plants because the water usage frequently includes prolonged retention, recirculating, heating/cooling, intense contact with air, etc. Therefore, almost all of these usages require additional disinfections that usually are a chemical treatment, like addition of chlorine related chemicals, in addition of biocides to control microbiological growth. The UV application, in combination with prefiltration may lead to significant savings and reducing of chemicals, particularly the biocides. This paper presents the analysis of the UV technology of disinfections, especially when concerned for specific cooling tower water usage and distribution systems.
