Human lymphocyte antigens (HLA) class I and class II in the autochthonous population of Gorski kotar, Croatia
The aim of this study was to compare frequency of the HLA-A, -B and -DR antigens in the autochthonous population of Gorski kotar (Croatia) with Croatian and Western European populations. The results indicated that the population of Gorski kotar differed from the remaining Croatian population in five antigens: HLA -B12, -B18, -B40, -DR2, and -DR3. The population of Gorski kotar and Western European population significantly differ in three antigens of the HLA-B locus: in Gorski kotar more frequent are HLA-B5 (p<0.005) and HLA-B17 (<0.01) and in the Western Europe HLA-B12 (p<0.001). Our results indicate that the HLA of the Gorski kotar population is more similar to that of the Western European than the Croatian population, which is, first of all, the result of turbulent migrations within that microregion during Habsburg domination.
