GUIDELINES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION AT ZAGREB AIRPORT

Airports are places of great air transport activity where air transport operations, accompanying ground activities and access road traffic inevitably impact the environment and surrounding communities. Furthermore, forecasted growth will create even greater demand for airport capacity, making additional pressure on the assimilative capacity of the environment. Environmental impacts at airports, in particular air pollution and noise, have been largely reduced during the years while water and soil pollution still present significant problems. In order to limit airports’ adverse impacts it is essential to devise a system of measures, procedures and actions that will manage resources and lead to improvements in overall environmental performance. This system, known as EMS is outlined in international standards, such as ISO 14001, or EMAS for the EU. These standards provide the basic framework and requirements of an EMS and specify criteria that can be used to model, assess, or audit an organization's EMS. The paper outlines the requirements of an environmental management system, the benefits that such system can create for an airport and the potential difficulties of implementation. As Zagreb airport is preparing for the implementation of ISO 14001, special emphasis will be given to the analysis of its environmental situation. Since the most important resources of drinking water for Zagreb are located underneath the airport terrains, appropriate measures should be undertaken to prevent pollution. The paper will describe environmental protection problems at Zagreb airport and propose possible solutions for their improvements.
