Optical Correlator Applications
Optical correlators (OCs) have received much attention since the VanderLugt's invention in 1964 [1], when he showed that optical pattern recognition can be realized using matched spatial filtering technique. The classical VanderLugt correlator used photographic plates or film for carrying both information: input and matched spatial filter (MSF). Thus, early applications were limited to rather simple problems such as the character (shape) recognition or quality control. Later applications include more sophisticated approaches due to the developments in addressable spatial light modulators (SLMs), in designing the correlation filters (CFs), and due to the versatility of the correlator system configuration [2]. Often desirable property of OC systems is the possiblity to work in real-time.
