Guaiacol peroxidases and callose deposition in Norway spruce needles affected with urban dust pollution
The effect of urban dust pollution on guaiacol peroxidases and callose deposition in current- and previous-year Norway spruce needles was investigated. According to data on the pollution levels obtained from the Croatian National Institute of Public Health, two sampling plots were defined: less (reference) and more polluted. More polluted site was characterised by higher amount of dustfall and heavy metals (Pb, Cd). The activities of guaiacol peroxidases were higher in both, current- and previous-year needles from more polluted locality. Also, the electrophoretic pattern of anionic peroxidases was different: more bands were observed in the sample from more polluted locality. Much more abundant callose deposits were detected in the needles from more polluted site, with different deposition pattering in the same needle age group. Since the most of Norway spruce trees are able to survive in such polluted atmosphere, the peroxidase action as well as the callose deposition can be considered as very efficient protecting mechanisms against urban pollution.
