Personality traits and gingival recession
Number of studies has shown, high level of oral cleanliness is fundamental to periodontal treatment, although very few factors relating to oral-hygiene behaviour have been explored. Some dental conditions may be correlated to models of personality. The purpose of this study was to assess personality characteristics and anxiety and depression levels of patients with gingival recession. Total of 99 pateints were selected, divided in two groups (with and without gingival recession) and examined by means of Beck` s anxiety inventory (BAI) and Beck` s depression inventory (BDI), to gether with an interview on oral hygiene habits. Results show statistically significant-difference BAI scores at 90% interval, while correlation between the use of hard toothbrush and highere BAI scores, as well as between gingival recession more frequent change of toothbrush and higher BAI scores. Although the sample is small we can speculate that gingival recession caused by excessive toothbraush trauma might be a predictor of anxiety, and possible behavioural disturbances.
