Synthetic Glycopeptides in Exploring Sugar-Mediated Nonenzymatic Covalent Modifications of Peptides and Proteins
Reactions that occur between reducing sugars and reactive amino groups in proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, result in vivo in different glycation products implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications and changes associated with ageing. The diversity and complexity of glycation products found in naturally occuring peptides hasten the need to clarify sequence of reactions that carbohydrate adducts undergo and find biomarkers of specific sugar-peptide structures. Addressing these issues, a series of glycopeptide model compounds were synthesized to investigate the effect of glycation on the physico-chemical properties of the parent peptides.
