Structural Transitions from Catanionic Surfactant Salt to Mixed Cationic/Anionic Vesicles
Structural transitions from crystalline catanionic salt to mixed cationic/anionic vesicles were investigated in the mixtures of alkylammonium chlorides and sodium alkyl sulfates of the same chain length. The excess of one of the surfactants in the catanionic lamellar structure led to the disruption of the planar bilayer and formation of the closed bilayer vesicle through series of equilibria. The composition of mixed cationic/anionic vesicles dependend on the molar ratio between cationic and anionic surfactant. Molecular scale rearrangament occurred most probably due to the electrostatic interactions between headgroups located at the bilayer/solution interface.
