A book of many uncertainties : Joyce's Dubliners
The author's opening thesis claims that as early as Dubliners (1914), a collection of short- stories, J. Joyce made language and strategies of representing reality his main preoccupation, while the referential dimension of language fades from focus. Providing examples from the short-stories, the author shows how precisely the objective rendering, brought to its extremes (by foregrounding the devices) subverts and challenges the codes of interpretability and referential power of realism. Author's minute narratological analysis distinguishes among four narrative modes, which together with the conscious evasion of thematic unity and the characters' motivation, and refusal of the closure, bar the simplistic and transparent reading of the stories.
