The variability of thicknesnes of the Aptian and Albian Carbonates as a consequence of changing depositional environments and emersions
From the Late Barremian to the base of the Late Albian, on that part of the carbonate platform that is today Istria, important events have been recognized: faulting, emersion and land phase, erosion and oscillating transgression. By recording the sedimetary environments and defining the stratigraphic parameters, it was possible to reconstruct the sequence of events beginning with the Late Batremian ermersion and ending with the re-establishment of the shallow-water sedimentation at the transition Early-Late Albian. Dif ferent paleoenvironmental conditions and frequent changes are rellected in the lack of some lithostratigraphic units or in their varying thicknesses. Thetefore the total thickness of the Lower Cretaceous deposits in West Istria is up to 30 % reduced compared with other regions of the Karst Dinarides.
