In this paper, special attention is paid to the influence of modern information and communication technologies on the new formation of retail operating units ; there is also an analysis of the market and logistical aspects of the territorial distribution of shops, and of the role of the GIS in the research of the retail trade location. Finally, there are some remarks about the development of Geographical Information Systems in the Republic of Croatia.
