Language learning strategies: Tools for life-long learning
This paper discusses the concept of language learning strategies (LLS). It gives an overview of the role of LLS in second language development as seen by various cognitive theories and models of second language acquisition. It also analyses the issues such as the term itself, definition and a general classification of LLS. A discussion of the characteristics of LLS aims at derivation of a more specific working definition of the term. Despite the unresolved issues, it is concluded that LLS are essential learning tools that enable learners to continue learning outside the classroom. This makes LLS extremely important for the learning of a foreign language because of the limited exposure to language input.
