Working day in professional folk singers: Acoustic analysis of the voice before and after working hours
The present study addresses the influences of working day on the voices of the professional folk signers. The subjects were ten males with an average age of 31 years. The average length of professional singing was 8, 5 years. Pre- and post-work voice recordings were analyzed for F0, jitter, shimmer and HNR at modal, lowest and highest voice pitch. The F0-range, vocal rise time and maximum phonation time were examined as well. The significant differences were found for F0 at the lowest phonation (basal voice pitch) and HNR at highest voice pitch. Generally speaking, the results did not indicate vocal deterioration due to vocal loading at work. However, because of the fact that the pre-work recordings were based on morning voice, it is possible that the actual voice changes due to working were not possible to measure. In other words, a new methodological approach is needed where the voice is to be measured after the warm-up procedure when it becomes more stable. The comparison of its acoustic parameters with those for post-work would be better indicators of possible voice fatigue induced by vocal load during the work.
