Transmission with independent turning radii for tracked vehicles

The paper reports on the importance of the kinematic (fixed) turning radii and their arrangement concerning the operating efficiency in steering. The kinematic turning potential of a transmission defined by the arrangement of the kinematic radii is compared to the limit imposed by the available power, and it is shown that small kinematic radii could impose use of the lowest part of the efficiency characteristic, which affects the steering performances of the vehicle. A new transmission concept named Transmission with Independent Turning Radii (TITR) is presented, which enables free choice of the kinematic radii values, whose arrangement fits the available power. The presented results for the transmission of a power up to 1000 kW, developed on the basis of this concept, emphasize the benefits regarding operating efficiency in steering and power density of the transmission.
