Water-soluble derivative of propolis (WSDP) prevent tumor growth and metastasing ability in mice

In this study the tumor inhibition rate and antimetastatic efficacy of a water soluble derivative of propolis (WSDP) were studied. Tumor was a transplantable mammary carcinoma (MCa) of CBA mouse. Metastasis in the lung were generated by intravenous (iv) injection of 2 x 105 viable tumor cells. Subcutaneous tumors were produced by 1 x 104 viable tumor cells. Water-soluble derivative of proplis (WSDP) was given to mice perorally (po) or intraperitoneally (ip) at doses of 50 or 150 mg/kg before or after tumor cell inoculation. Therapies reduced the number of metastases in the lung. Oral or systemic application of WSDP significantely reduced subcutaneous (sc) tumor growth and prolonged survival of mice. It is likely that antitumor and antimetastatic activity of the WSDP is mainly mediated by immunomodulatory activity. Changes in several immunological parameters such as production of LAF by peritoneal macrophages and the efficacy of those macrophages to kill tumor cell in vitro, responses of lymphocytes to mitogen stimuli, and weight and cellularity of spleen respectively, correlated well with antimetastatic properties of the WSDP. Based on these results we postulate that the antitumor and antimetastatic activity of WSDP is mainly due to a pronounced immunomodulation.
